1,000 Books Before Kindergarten
Welcome to our 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Program!
This free program encourages you to read books with your child before he or she enters school – a goal experts say children need to help them to read for themselves.
One of the best ways to encourage learning is to spend time sharing books every day. Reading together helps develop important pre-reading skills that provide a solid reading foundation – a key to learning success. Plus, sharing stories together is fun!
Here are the easy steps for participation:
- Read together, daily if possible. It’s perfectly fine to re-read some books.
- Write the titles on the log sheets in this folder. You can include books that are read by teachers, librarians, grandparents and caregivers.
- Come to the library with the folder when you reach these milestones: 100, 250, 500, 750 and 1000 books, so that your child can receive a prize.
This program has no end date except your child’s first day of Kindergarten, so don’t feel rushed – just enjoy this bonding experience. Also, a child can start the program at any time between birth and Kindergarten. If you read just 10 books each week for 2 years, you’ll have read 1,040 books! We can give your child a modified goal based on the age of the child when beginning the program. (For example, a four year-old’s goal can be 250 books in the year before Kindergarten.) Please let us know if you have any questions. A list of 100 suggested books is included in this folder.
